Acne Laser Treatment

Laser Technology can be an effective acne treatment, not only for the removal of acne spots but also to treat the scarring which can often form when acne wounds begin to heal, creating long lasting skin damage.

Although a common skin complaint (particularly during puberty), acne can be very distressing as red, scaly acne spots (called papules or pustules) can appear all over the body, most commonly on the face, neck and upper body. This is caused by the production of too much sebum and perspiration which blocks the pores and harbours bacteria on the skin, causing infection.

> Laser treatments remove scars and pigmentation by heating hemoglobin in the blood in capillaries beneath the skin.

> Heating blood vessels deprives upper layers of skin of oxygen and nutrients so they slough off, giving new healthy skin a chance to replace them.

> The darker your skin, the less likely laser treatment is to be successful.

> The more sensitive your skin, the less likely laser treatment is to be successful.

> Laser therapy always requires multiple visits and never gets rid of 100% of scars or pigmentation. A program of regular skin treatments such as Exposed Skin Care may complete the job started by laser therapy, at much lower cost.

How does Acne Laser Treatment work?

Most people experience some degree of acne. Acne is caused by hormonal stimuli to the acne or sebaceous glands in the skin. The increased production of oil causes the pores to become blocked, so that the oil cannot come up to the skin surface. The acne itself is an infection caused by skin bacteria that feed on and break down this oil. Laser acne treatment is about to exterminate bacteria. Acne typically affects the face or other areas of the body- front and back of the chest, lower back, buttocks or thighs.  Active acne is the result of bacteria in your skin enlarging and obstructing your sebaceous glands. Unfortunately, it creates painful and unsightly pus-filled spots and cysts across the body. If left alone, acne is probable to become a scar. As well as being a physiological problem, the appearance of acne causes many sufferers to agonise with worry and a lessened self-image. Early treatment is essential to keep acne under control, and to aid avoid any lasting damage to the skin.

We provide the most progressive acne treatment and acne laser treatment. Our cutting edge Laser Treatment is an extremely popular choice for those suffering from acne who want clear, healthy looking skin again with permanent results. As a professional and experienced clinic we are able to treat most skin types. For most patients, 6 to 12 treatments are required to fully resolve your acne issues, though we tailor each treatment program to the number of sessions you need.

Acne Laser Treatment FAQ

The pulsed dye laser works in two ways:

1 - The laser light kills the acne bacteria that cause infection and lead to the formation of spots. As the whole face is usually treated the bacteria are killed over a wide area reducing breakout and stopping the infection spreading.

2 - The formation of large amounts of new collagen below and around the spots gives a huge boost to the healing process, causing spots to disappear with the decreased likelihood of acne scars developing.

The pores in your skin contain oil producing glands called sebaceous glands that release oil called sebum. This production of sebum is normal for the development of your skin. Acne occurs when your pores become ‘clogged’ with sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria that is normally present on your skin.

Often the walls of a clogged pore can become damaged. If this occurs the bacteria and dead skin cells work their way under live skin cells. This results in an infection that is evident by the development of pimples with redness. The deeper the clogged pore the worse the infection becomes often causing a cyst.

Acne scarring is the response of the skin when it is damaged, by infection, inflammation and scar tissue.

The pulsed dye laser works by heating up the inferior layers of the skin creating collagen that stimulates a healing response. This acts as a new foundation for the skin, reducing scarring and improving skin tone.

For Active Acne, these include topical antibiotics, topical benzoyl peroxide, oral antibiotics, oral contraceptive (in females) and topical and oral retinoids. Please visit or GP for these.

Firstly, a course of 2 to 4 treatments is usually recommended at 4 to 8 weekly intervals with the pulsed dye laser. Subsequent top up treatments may be required after this at approximately 6 monthly intervals.

With respect to pulsed dye laser, the treatment is moderately painless. Side effects, other than slight redness lasting a few hours or mild bruising lasting a few days, are gratefully rare. There is a small risk of pigment change in patients with darker skin types.
