How does it work?
Microneedling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy) involves the use of a medical-grade device equipped with ultra-fine, sterile needles. As the device glides over the skin, it creates thousands of microscopic punctures (micro-injuries). The body responds to these controlled injuries by rushing blood to the area and initiating a healing cascade, which rapidly produces new collagen and elastin fibers.
Before the Microneedling treatment
To prepare your skin and minimize irritation, you must avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds for at least a week before your appointment. Discontinue the use of active skincare ingredients, such as Retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and Vitamin C, for 3 to 5 days prior. Avoid blood-thinning medications (like aspirin and ibuprofen) for 24-48 hours to minimize pinpoint bleeding.
During the Microneedling treatment
Your practitioner will double-cleanse your skin and apply a highly effective topical numbing cream to ensure the procedure is comfortable. Once you are fully numb, a targeted serum (like hyaluronic acid) is applied to the skin. The microneedling device is then carefully passed over the treatment area. You may feel a slight vibration or a mild scratching sensation, but it is generally very well tolerated.
What results can I expect to see and how many do I need?
You will notice an immediate “glow” once the initial redness subsides, but the true remodeling of the skin takes time. Visible improvements in skin texture and firmness will emerge over 3 to 6 weeks as new collagen is formed. For the best, most corrective results, a course of 3 to 6 treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart is highly recommended.
Treatment overview
PROCEDURE TIME: 45 to 60 minutes (including numbing time).
DOWNTIME: 24 to 72 hours of redness and mild swelling, similar to a sunburn. Light flaking may occur after a few days.
DURATION OF RESULTS: Long-lasting. Once the new collagen is formed, the structural improvements are permanent, though natural aging will continue. Maintenance sessions 2-3 times a year are recommended.
Frequently Asked Questions About Microneedling
Is microneedling painful?
While the idea of needles sounds intimidating, the treatment is highly manageable. We apply a strong, medical-grade topical numbing cream prior to the procedure. Most clients describe the sensation as a light vibration or a mild scratching, particularly over bony areas like the forehead or cheekbones.
How long does the redness last after treatment?
Immediately after the procedure, your skin will look and feel like it has a mild to moderate sunburn. The most significant redness typically subsides within the first 24 hours. By day 2 or 3, your skin may just look slightly pink, and you can safely conceal it with mineral makeup.
Can I wear makeup after microneedling?
You absolutely must avoid wearing any makeup for at least 24 to 48 hours following your treatment. Your skin has thousands of open micro-channels, and applying makeup can trap bacteria and cause infections or severe breakouts. Once the channels have closed (usually after 48 hours), you can resume using clean mineral makeup.
How should I care for my skin post-treatment?
Keep your skin incredibly clean and deeply hydrated. Use only a gentle cleanser and a pure hyaluronic acid serum for the first few days. Avoid direct sunlight, sweating (heavy workouts, saunas), and hot showers for at least 48-72 hours. You must apply a high-quality SPF daily once you go outside.
Is microneedling safe for dark skin tones?
Yes! Unlike many harsh laser therapies that carry a high risk of hyperpigmentation for darker skin tones, microneedling does not utilize heat. This makes it an incredibly safe and effective treatment for all Fitzpatrick skin types.
Who is NOT a good candidate for microneedling?
You should not undergo microneedling if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have active inflammatory acne breakouts, open wounds, cold sores, or suffer from severe eczema or psoriasis in the treatment area. Individuals prone to keloid scarring should also avoid this treatment.
Can microneedling help with acne scars?
Yes, microneedling is widely considered one of the gold-standard treatments for atrophic (depressed) acne scars. By mechanically breaking up the old scar tissue and stimulating fresh collagen, it plumps the depressions and smooths the overall skin texture.
