Whilst the wand never comes into direct contact with the skin, it triggers the skin’s healing response by creating temporary injury to the soft tissue. How does it work?

Treatment is delivered using an electronic hand-piece, the plasma pen. This precision device is fitted with an applicator tip (metal probe) which enables the transfer of energy to the skin by utilizing the voltage in the air between the device tip and skin to generate a plasma charge. The transfer of energy to the skin takes place only when the applicator tip has a distance of approximately 0.5 mm to the skin, which means it does not come into direct contact with the skin.

The visible result of the treatment is a thermal skin reaction, the so-called plasma points. Each plasma spot creates an effect radius that contracts the skin in the immediate vicinity. Due to the optimal arrangement of the dots, an effect grid is created which causes an instant and significant tightening of the targeted area. (The treated area is sublimated—converted directly to vapour—using the plasma beam without damage to the deeper skin or muscle). The tissue retraction gives results that are comparable to invasive surgery.

Before the treatment

The most important preparation you may want to consider is your time during the first week following your treatment. Give careful thought before scheduling your appointment. Ensure you have no important meetings to attend, special occasions or school runs etc. You may wish to arrange your appointment during annual leave, especially if your job requires you to look presentable (e.g., teachers/public facing roles). This is important as it is likely that you will prefer to stay at home until all of the brown crusts and swelling has subsided and you look more like yourself. However, this may not be an issue to you if the visual effects of the treatment are of no concern.

Please attend your appointment with clean skin—no moisturiser, makeup/tanning products on the treatment area, especially no mascara on lashes if the eye area is being treated. You may wish to wash your hair on the morning of your treatment as the treatment area cannot get wet for the full week following the procedure. If you are having an upper and lower eye-lift treatment on the same day, it is advisable to make arrangements not to drive yourself.

How does Plasma Fibroblast work?

Firstly, a numbing agent is applied to the treatment area to help ensure that the patient does not experience any discomfort. Once cleansed and the numbing agent has had time to take effect, treatment can begin. Your practitioner will pass a small handheld device across the treatment area. This device emits a small plasma flash (also known as an electrical arc) from its tip, leaving a small polka dot impression on the skin. The wand works by utilising the voltage in the air between the tip of the device and the skin, and whilst the Fibroblast wand never makes direct contact with the skin, the plasma flash leaves behind a series of these dots, which later heal, leaving the skin firmer and tighter.

Will it work for me?

Fibroblast is great for treating an array of problems of the face and body. Fibroblast can tighten loose stomach skin after pregnancy, diminish stretch marks, improve the appearance of acne scars and eradicate skin imperfections such as skin tags and sun spots. The treatment can also tighten hooded eyelids, improve lower eyebags, smooth crow’s feet, rejuvenate the décolletage, and even erase the appearance of smoker’s lines. How long will the results last for?

Results of Fibroblast are permanent and noticeable almost immediately after treatment. Having said this, it is worth noting that – just like any surgical procedure – it cannot do anything to fend off any further signs of ageing that may develop in later years. To optimise your Fibroblast results and maintain the positive effects for as long as possible, you should be careful to limit things such as intense sun exposure, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, as well as making sure to practice diligent skincare.

Are there any side effects?

The most notable side effect of Fibroblast is what is known as ‘carbon crusting’. This is the scabbing that forms on the skin as a result of the plasma flashes. It forms in a polka dot pattern where contact was made during treatment, and is a perfectly normal stage of the healing process. If kept adequately hydrated during the recovery stage, this scabbing should last no longer than 7 days or so. You will be instructed how to best care for the skin following treatment by your practitioner. Some more sensitive skin types may also experience some mild swelling during the first 3 days of downtime, however this typically clears entirely by day 5. Side effects beyond this are extremely rare, however in these rare cases, it is worth noting that there can be a minute risk of temporary pigmentation, infection and/or scarring.

Does it hurt?

Treatment is entirely non-surgical. The majority of patients claim that there is absolutely no pain during treatment, however some more sensitive skin-types may report ‘minimal discomfort’. All patients are treated with a powerful, topical anaesthetic before undergoing Fibroblast, and therefore the area being treated is thoroughly numbed beforehand.

How long is recovery?

There is no medically-decreed downtime associated with Fibroblast, however, the skin will need to replenish and we estimate the average recovery period to take around 7 days. This will, of course, vary depending on the size of the treatment area. During this time, you can resume regular activities in line with the advice given by your practitioner, who will provide you with aftercare recommendations. It is important to try not to remove or scratch at the carbon crusts, and patients should avoid sports or swimming during this time also.

When can I return to work?

After Fibroblast, there is nothing medically preventing you from returning to normality straight away. Having said this, some patients do choose to take a week or so from work to allow the healing stages of treatment to occur. This is because the skin must turn over a cycle, and therefore will develop some scabbing known as ‘carbon crust’. This should take around 1 week to fall away and it is advised that patients do not try to cover this with makeup. Because of this, some feel more comfortable taking up to 7 days of designated ‘downtime’.

How long does it take?

On average, we expect one session of Fibroblast to take up to 30 minutes to complete. Having said this, the duration of your particular treatment can vary depending on the size of the treatment area. For best results, 2-3 sessions may be recommended after your initial session – these are typically spaced up to 12 weeks apart.
